GISBORNE SEES CONTESTS IN PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS.

GISBORNE, January 2 The principal attraction to-day was the first day of the Ngatapa sports, held at the Park Racecourse, Gisborne, nt which New Zealand professional championships were decided. The weather was fine. Following are results of the professional championships;— 100yds Championship—A. Berry (Gisborne) 1, T. Williams (Gisborne) 2, G. Murland (Gisborne) 3. Won by two and a half yards, one yard between second and third. Time—lo 2-sse«%, 4 40yds Championship—W. o*. Preston (Wmingarei) 1, G. Murland (Gisborne) 2, .T. Hurroy (Gisborne) 3. Won by five yards, three yards between second and third. Time—s3sec. A protest against Preston on account of alleged incorrect performances at the time of nomination will be considei-ed by the Poverty Bay Centre on Afonday morning. One-mile New Zealand Championship —W. C. Preston (Whangarei) l, 1,. Carrington (I’okaka, AJain Trunk) 2, AI. Johns (Gisborne) 3. Won by twenty yards, fifty yards between second and third. Time—(min 37sec. One A-lile Cycling Championship:—J. Henderson (Christchurch) 1, W. Maekie (Christchurch) 2, S. M’Cann (New Plymouth) 3. Won by a wheel, five yards between second and third. Time—2min 43 1-ssec. Five-mile Cycling Championship—.l. Henderson (Christchurch) 1, W. Alarkie (Christchurch) 2, S. M’Caim (New Plymouth) 3. An exciting finish, Henderson winning by two yards, with Af'Cana a yard back. Time—lsinin 2-freec.
