Mrs J. F. Studholme, Fendalton, will return to Christchurch on Tuesday from the North Island.

Mr and Mrs H. S. W. King, of Auckland, have arrived in Christchurch, and are registered at Warner’s Hotel.

Mrs E. Low and Mrs Dickson, of Dunedin, are staying at the United Service Hotel.

Mrs S. H. Brown and Mrs H. T. Merritt, of Auckland, are among the recent arrivals staying at Warner's Hotel. Mr and Mrs John Martin have returned to Christchurch from the North Island.

Mr and Mrs L. V. Whall and their daughter Yvonne, who have been spending a few weeks with Mrs Dolan, Little River, are returning home on Wednesday. Delightful in every respect was the dance recital staged by Misses Madeline Vyner and Iris Montgomery and pupils at the Caledonian Hall on Saturday afternoon. Both tiny tots and principals shared the credit of a splendid performance. “In Cherry Blossom Land,” an Oriental dance scena, was artistically carried out, both in regard to the costuming and the dancing. It was a fitting opening for a fi \ programme. Misses Madeline Vyner, Irene Stone and Iris Montgomery, who took the principal parts, gave especially fine portrayals. Mrs Roy Twyneham capably controlled the orchestra, and the stage management left little to be desired.

The committee of the Home Economics Association met on Tuesday to pass accounts and receive the report of their recent exhibition, which was a financial success Those present were: Mrs George Cooper (president), Misses Blackmore and M’Kie (vicepresidents), Mesdames Bowbyes, Garton, Cooke and Stevens, Misses Sidey, Gilmore, Wardle and Bevin (secretary). The gift stall showed a profit of £25, which had been forwarded to Dr Blackmore for the children’s fresh air home. A donation of £2 2s was voted to Mrs Gardiner’s memorial scholarship fund, Mrs Gardiner having been the first patron of the association. Votes of thanks were passed to all who had helped with the stalls and tearoom, and those who had sent in exhibits, especially the children of the primary schools. The Star of Opawa Lodge, No. 30, 1.0.0. F., held a social function in the lodgeroom on Saturday. Musical, vocal and elocutionary items were contributed, and dancing was enjoyed. Mrs Moultrie and Mr J. Puddle were the accompanists. Opportunity was taken to farewell Brother Rae, who is leaving for Timaru. Supper was dispensed by members of the Social Committee. Among those present were: Mesdames G. Shaw, Hudson, H. W. Reed, Falkingham, S. Sandford, F. Dunshea, Preston, Brown, J. Moultrie, J. Puddle, O’Brien, Stocker and Hastie, Misses Dunshea, D. Moultrie, Sandford, Purver and Stocken, Brothers Rae, Falkingham, Wykes, Oliff, Parks, Reed, Sandford, Shaw, Hudson, Wright, Scott, Puddle, Patterson, Wykes, Jones, M’Donnell, Berrett, Walker, Purver, O’Brien, Stocken, Hastie, J. Moultrie, Perkins and D. Moultrie. At the annual social of the staff and committee of the Sumner District High School on Friday evening, the committee took the opportunity to say farewell to Miss M. C. Hoben, who has been appointed to a position at Waddington. Mr W. C. Collins, the chairman, made appreciative reference to her work at the school and to her friendly relations with her pupils. He wished her happiness and success in her new sphere of work and expressed the committee’s regret at her departure. On their behalf, he asked her to accept a gold-mounted fountain pen as a small token of their appreciation of her services. Mr G. A. Alexander, ex-chair-man, said that it was with great pleasure that he could state the last committee’s appreciation of Miss Hoben’s work. Many parents had expressed to him their regret at her departure. Her work had been marked with success, and she was a great favourite with all her pupils. Miss Hoben, who was handed a bouquet of roses by Mr S. Barber, the secretary, thanked the speakers for their kind expressions. The monthly meeting of the Christchurch Creche and Kindergarten Association was held last week, when Mrs 11. T. J. Thacker presided. There were also present—Mesdames Peppier, Evans, Williams, Williamson and Empson. An apology for absence for received from Mrs Peverill. The reports of the five schools stated that, although many of the children had been absent on account of colds, mumps and whooping cough, the attendances had been quite satisfactory. Subscriptions were as follow: Sunbeam £5 7s, Phil lipstown £3 7s 6d, Sydenham £2 6s Id, Richmond £3 17s Bd, Selwyn £3 Os 2d. Attendances: Sunbeam 42, Phillipstown 53, Sydenham 61, . Richmond 41, Selw3 r n 45. The roll numbers at all the Kindergartens had improved lately. The schools will be closing on December 15. During the month Phillij>stown held a “coin” afternoon to celebrate their kindergarten birthday. The children gave a programme of songs, games and dances. The proceeds of tho afternoon amounted to £3 18s. Visitors to the kindergarten were Mrs Griffiths, Mrs Dunbier and Mrs Williams. Selwyn also had their “coin” afternoon, when £7 12s 7d was given. The Sydenham Committee reported that they had parted with Mrs Wilson with regret. Mrs Wilson, who had been with the association since its formation, had left Christchurch, and was taking up her residence in Nelson. Miss Eva Wilson had been a voluntary assistant at the Sydenham Kindergarten for a considerable period. The eng gement is announced of Nora Hayden, late of Christchurch, to John Francis Moran, of Auckland.

A successful combined fcocial was held at Sumner on Friday evening, when the sL.fi and the committee of the Sumner District High School held their annual gathering. The evening was spent in dancing and cards, and a short programme was contributed by Miss Bessie Browne, Messrs E. A. Johnson. R. M’Lachlan, W. J. Duff and G. F. Allen. Mr H. M. Williams was M.C. The spot dence was won by Mrs E. A. Johnson and Mrs G. F. Allen. Amongst those present were Mrs W. H. Nicholson, Mrs F. Barber, Mrs Pye, Miss M. Reese, Miss G. Wilson, Miss C. Andrews, Miss R. J. Bowden, Miss M. C. Hoben, Miss G. Box, Miss N. Jones, Mrs Gormack, Miss E. Bonnington, Mrs W. J. Duff, Mr and Mrs J. Browne. Mr and Mrs R. M’Lachlan, Mr and Mrs F. H. Mathews, Mr and Mrs A.
