Mr and Mrs M. Wills (Alburv) and Miss Orbell (Timaru) are among last night’s arrivals at Warner’s Hotel. Miss Nancy Lambie will return to .Christchurch next week, after a holiday visit to relatives in Wanganui. Miss Anthea Loughnan and Miss Aroha Clifford are spending a short holiday at Diamond Harbour.

An enjoyable afternoon was spent recently at the residence of Air fend Mrs j. Walker, “Kozy,” Bletsoe Avenue, Sprevdon, in honour of the birthday of their daughter, Olga. Amongst those present were:—Mr and Airs O. F Sutton, Mrs R. F. Francies, Air and Airs J. Aloffat, Mrs T. Somerville, Air T. Somerville, Airs Rhodes, Mrs Primmer, Mrs Lockwood, Airs C. Dobbs, W. Dobbs, Mrs G. J. Dobbs, Alisses J. Sutton, B. Aloffat, B. Francies, AI. Somerville, AI. HollobOn, AI. Dobbs, R. Francies, J. Primmer, Af. Dobbs and N. Primmer. The little guest was the recipient of many beautiful gifts. A meeting of the New Brighton branch of the British Seamen’s Guild was held at the residence of Airs J. H. Shaw, New Brighton, on November 23. A short discourse was given by Air F. Alinty, superintendent of the Lyttelton Institute, on the _ good effects of the home influence in the irt stitute on the sailors in port. A vote of thanks was accorded Air Alinty. At the conclusion of the meeting, afternoon tea was dispensed. The .ladies present included: —Mesdames H. T. J. Thacker, J. A. Alerry, J. A. Tait* C. M. Roswell, IT. A. Bishop, Raine, Alitchell. Afembers of the Riccarton Women’s Christian Temperance Union and Clarence Road Alethodist Ladies’ Guild held a combined social afternoon to do honour to Aliss Russell, who has been of great assistance to them during the last few years. Mrs James eulogised Aliss Russell’s work for the church and Airs C. Farrell thanked her for the help she had given to the W.C.T.tT. A presentation was made of an xylonite toilet set and purse. Miss Russell suitably responded. The following gave items Aiesdames Brighting, Reynolds and W. 11. Barrel!, Misses Stephenson and Johnson. A competition was won by Mrs At’Lean. The gathering was brought to a pleasant conclusion by the dispensing of afternoon tea.

A CHRONICLE OF SOCIAL EVENTS

Mr and Airs Turner are staying at the “Ocean View,” Governor’s Bay. Mr fend Airs E. Clark, Lyttelton, who have been spending a holiday on the West Coast, will leave on Alonday for ITanmer Springs. Airs Barak, who has been spending a few days at Lagmlior has returned to Fendalton. Mr and Airs H. S. W. King, of Auckland, arrived in Christchurch this morning, and are registered at Warner’s Hotel. Air and Airs A. Fenwick left Christchurch this morning for Dunedin* where they will in future reside. Airs Victor White (Riccarton), who has been for a trip to England, returned to New Zealand by the Arawa. Accompanied by Air White, who went .to Wellington to meet her, she arrived in Christchurch this morning. Aliss Joan Hislop (Dunedin) is the guest of Mrs William Day (Gloucester Street West). A dance in aid of the Lady Truby King Fellowship Fund will be held on Thursday, December 9, at Dixieland. Mr Dickson has kindly lent Dixieland for the occasion and an energetic committee are working hard to make the evening a successful one. Tickets are obtainable for all members of the committee. Hon Airs Tahu Rhodes, Mesdames G. G. Aitken, F. S. Wilding, E. C. Crosse, Ernest Boulton, Alisses M. Enright, J. MDougall, Alessrs C>. At. Ollivier, E. G. Norman, Gerald Anderson, F. W. Freeman and F. G. Bristed. The usual weekly dance and tuthfe party in aid of the Sydenham Free Kindergarten will be held in St Saviour’s Hall, Queen Street, on Thursday evening. Reg. Wood’s orchestra will supply the music for the dancing, and a large attendance is anticipated. A concert in aid of the Children’s Fresh Air Home will be held on Tues- j day, November 30, in the Caledonian | Hall. Airs E. Calson, the organiser, has obtained the generous assistance of , many well-known Christchurch artists, 1 and an excellent evening’s entertain- » ment is anticipated. Mr and Airs L. A. King entertained i last Saturday evening a number of friends at their residence, Lichfield Street, to celebrate the coming of age of tjieir elder daughter, Hazel. A delightful evening was spent with games and dancing in the beautifully decorated dance room. A dainty supper Was served in the dining-room, where the cake decorated with twenty- 1 one candles was cut by the guest of honour. Appropriate toasts were pro posed and replied to by Alessrs E.
