SCHOOL COMMITTEES’ ASSOCIATION MEETS.
A meeting of the Canterbury School Committees’ Association was held last evening, Mr G. P. Purnell presiding. Reporting on the question of school libraries, the chairman said that a conference had been called, to take place at the offices of the Education Board on Friday next. The Canterbury College Board of Governors had said that they could not promise any support from the Public Library. On the subject of school savings banks. Mr Purnell said that the Headmasters’ Association had discouraged the notion, on account of the fact that 40 per cent of the children already had pavings bank accounts. Mr Purnell contended that these accounts were in reality “ dead,” and that most, if not all, of the children would enter into the scheme for the encouragement of thrift. All that waa required to make it a success was a little enthusiasm on the part of the teachers, for whom there would be a little work. Mr Wright, who had been inquiring about the transfer of headmasters in the middle of a term, a question raised by the Belfast committee, said that the chairman of the Education Board was prepared to support the association in any effort to prevent this occurring. Mr E. Wright moved, “ That a remit be sent to the coming Annual conference, recommending that the Education Board be requested to frame regulations providing that no headmaster or assistant, teacher shall be transferred from one school to another during the progress of a term, all appointments to be made at the beginning of the term.’* The motion was carried. A letter was received from the Belfast committee objecting to children having to pay tram fares in order to get. to their manual training classes. The chairman said that lie had spoken to the chairman of the Education Board upon the subject, and he had said that the objection was a reasonable one. and that perhaps the board should pay the children’s fares. T>r Hansen, principal of the Christchurch TeehnioaJ College, wrote asking that the assoniatfon's annual grant to the college should be renewed. The letter was received. Mr S. Faulkner, of the St Albans School Committee, wrote tendering his resignation. The letter was received and the secretary was instructed to write to Mr Faulkner conveying the association's appreciation of his services. Mr Jarrett was elected to fill the vacancy. Messrs Purnell arid T. W. West were elected to represent the association at! the Dominion conference. An Interesting lecture on “ The Care of CM'drsn*. Teeth " was given by Mr C. I . Ptipe school dental officer, in S®? of at Iho Sydenham School. Mr Tripe was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
