Nominations for the South Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting will close at eight o’clock to-morrow night.

The Riccarton light-weight jockey, C. E. Eastwood, was married this week.

F. D. Jones has made another start with the imported mare, Calcite. She has been spelling since early in the winter and looks in good order to resume training.

Two years ago. Mr H. A. Knight sent two of his brood mares to Australia, where they were mated with English horses. Last season each of them produced a colt, Medley (dam of Ballymena and Limerick) to Rossendale and the Gluten mare Comedy by Orby’s Pride. The colts were sent ot Riccarton some time ago, to be weaned, preparatory to their dams going north on a visit to Limond. The youngsters were gelded this week and when they have had a speil Jones will break them in and prepare them for two-year-old racing next season.

Count Cavour is still having a quiet time after his recent racing. He looks in the best of health, however, and T. 11. Gillett will soon have him moving along a bit faster, in view of Auckland engagements. His companions on the north trip have nothing definitely settled, but it is possible that Glentruin and Money Order will go with him, provided they do well during the next lew weeks.

Though Limerick is not doing any work on the tracks, he will be kept in light exercise while his foot heal 3 from the trouble which affected him in Australia.

The three-year-old Battlement is bowling along freely in his tasks. He is booked for a trip north for the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting, where he will be the only representative of F. D. Jones’s stable.

Glentruin figures as an acceptor for the Feilding Stakes. A definite decision concerning the trip will be arrived at during the next few days. * * * *

A three-year-old gelding by Sutala from Greenstreet, the dam of Corinthic, has been taken in hand by F. P. Claridge, for Mr J. G. Macdonald.

G. Murray Aynsley is working Footfall and Paperchase the reverse way at Riccarton, and it is probable that they will go north for the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting.

The two-year-olds, Agrion and Eulalie, are among the reverse workers at Riccarton, and they may represent Mr G. D. Greenwood at the Auckland summer meeting.

H. Nurse has Rapier going on well in his work. He will be racing at the South Canterbury meeting next month, while his holiday campaign will be done at the Manawatu and Marton meetings. His form at Riccarton was encouraging, and he should pay his way during the northern trip. * * * *

Though F. Christmas withdrew Fresco from the Auckland Cup, he still claims other engagements at the meeting. It is almost certain that he will do his holiday racing in the North Island, either at the Auckland or the Manawatu meeting.

Mr E. Gates, whose colours have not been in evidence for a long time, contemplates making another start as an owner. F. P. Claridge is now handling for him the three-year-old filly by Greyspear from Lady Victoria, the dam of Royal Star and Frisco Mail.

W. G. Hobbs is handling the two-year-old filly Luminant, by Thurnham from Boniform’s sister, Sunglow, and will get her ready to carry Mr G. Gould’s colours. * * * * Sir R. Heaton Rhodes will shortly be represented at local race meetings. He has placed a three-year-old gelding by Clarenceux from a Bonifomi mare with F. P. Claridge. * * * * The Paper Money mare, Waterlow, who is now a member of F. P. Claridge’s team, is going on nicely in her preparation. ❖ * * * The two-year-old Jericho, by Archey from Judith, is on the easy list at present. He is likely to be more than useful in the atitumn, when longer journeys have to be negotiated. * * * * An English sportsman who saw Manfred win the Caulfield Cup expressed the opinion that in looks and galloping ability he would bear comparison to the great horses in England. * * * * A perusal of figures bearing on the sum won by descendants of noteworthy sires is always invested with much interest to those who follow the exploits of the various branches of the thoroughbred family. New Zealand is in the proud position of claiming the horse placed'at the head of the list by his descendants in this part of the world. This is Martian, and the sum credited to the progeny of the son of Martagon gives him a pronounced lead over all the other horses who have performed stud duties in the southern hemisphere. It is, indeed, a great record that is down to the credit of Martian, and, even admitting that prize money is likely to further increase, the record of Martian may stand for a good few years yet. The following may be accepted as a fairly reliable statement of the sums won by descendants of the leading stallions in New Zealand and Australia : —Martian, by Martagon—Otterden, £332,500; Maltster, by Bill of Portland—Barley, £288,363; Grafton, by Galopin—Maid Ma.riaji, £250,230; Wallace, by £246,145; The Welkin, by Flying Fox— Crowberry, £271,119; Linacre, by Wolf’s Crag—Lismaine, £257,100; Comedy King, by Persimmon—Tragedy Queen, £243,236; Pistol, by Carbine— Wenonah, £206,866; Bobadil, by Bill of Portland—She, £167,145.

* * * * In reference to the Melbourne Cup winner Spearfelt, a Melbourne writer states that prior to the Australian Jockey Club’s Derby in 1924 a wealthy squatter cast eyes on the Spearhead colt and entered into negotiations in the hope of being able to effect his purchase. The owners of Spearfelt named 7000gns as the price at which they would sell the bay colt. This was considered too high by the wealthy squatter and Spearfelt was left in the old ownership. The two men interested in Spearfelt have good reason to rejoice over the fact that the would-be buyer declined to complete the purchase, for in the interval the horse has won over £20,000 in stakes.

The New Zealand trainer V. O’Neill, who was responsible for the preparation of Spearfelt, winner of the Melbourne Cup of 1926, is quite a character in wielding an influence over the temperament of horses. A Melbourne writer remarks: "Spearfelt is a horse with whom O'Neill has played tricks. One of these was to lie down in the horse's stall and allow the animal to stand with one foot on his face. The boy who stood while William Tell shot the apple off his head displayed scarcely more confidence, but O’Neill has a way with horses. He it was who, during his leave in London, made a pony sit down in front of Whitehall, to the amazement and amusement of the crowd.” Shortly after the conclusion of the Australian Jockey Club’s meeting last month O’Neill disposed of his half-share in Spearfelt for 2500gns, but it was a condition of the sale that he was to participate to the extent qf half in Spearfelt’s winnings up to the conclusion of the Victoria Racing Club’s Spring Meeting. The winner’s portion of the Melbourne Cup stakes amounted to £9712, which means that an additional £4876 went to V. O’Neill.”

The 17,000 guineas paid for a colt by Hurry On from Escurie, in England recently, constitutes a fresh record price for a yearling, and much interest will be centered in his appearance on the turf. The Aga Khan, who bought the colt at the price named, did not experience much luck with the large number of yearlings he bought in the two previous years, but the Indian noble has great wealth and the financial aspect does not count with him. Sceptre still stands out as the bright particular stair of the division sold for a high price at the yearling stage. The following little table will show the handsome return he made, and another side of the picture is furnished in the respective cases of Westward Ho, Blue Ensign and Amilcar:Cost. Won Gns. £ Sceptre, by Persimmon— Ornament 10,000 38,681 Westward Ho, by Swynford—Blue Tit 11,500 1,024 Blue Ensign, by The Tetrarch—Blue Tit . 14,500 Nil. Amilcar, by Phalaris —Silver Wand 9.700 Nil. Sceptre was bought by Mr R. S. Sievier. Lord Glanely bought both Westward Ho,, and Blue Ensign, while Amilcar was a purchase made by the Aga Khan.

The Australian sportsman. Mr Otway Falkiner, returned to Sydney a few days ago, after spending the best part of a week in Hawke’s Bay, where he was the guest of Mr W. G. Stead. Mr Falkiner thinks of returning to the Dominion in January, and, in any case, his present intention is to pay another visit a year hence with a team of his own with which he' will take part in the holiday meeting at Auckland and the Wellington January meeting. The presence of a racing team from Australia, which would probably include one or two of Australia’s cracks (on lease), would add greatly to the interest of the meetings of the two North Island clubs. The only purchase made in the Dominion by Mr Falkiner on this occasion was that of the five-year-old Absurd gelding, Fool’s Paradise, from Mr E. Riddiford, although several other horses were priced on his behalf. Fool’s Paradise was shipped to Sydney on Friday. RICCARTON NOTES. Tuesday. The conditions were perfect for training operations this morning, but proceedings were not particularly exciting. The number seven grass track ■was open, but a good deal of the work was done on the plough. A few horses were .sent the reverse way in view of possible trips to Auckland. P. V. Mason, who was out early, gave Agrion,,. Eulalie and Lucinda useful work the reverse way. Footfall and Paperchase, also working the reverse way, got through useful tasks. Front Rank was restricted to threequarter pace work for six furlongs. Red Wink had Kilris a mate in a working gallop over seven furlongs, while Coupon put a lot of dash into a five furlong sprint. Scrip reeled off five furlongs in very attractive style. Glentruin and Celerity 11. started off together for a five furlong spin, but Glentruin was much too good for his •mate. The two-year-olds Don Jose and Silver Coot, were companions in a smart half-mile sprint. Battlement went well over six furlongs, with the Solferino-Raid filly Bloodshed to bring him home. j Serotina and Wild Work moved freely in a half-mile spin up the back. Centrepiece had Card Trick as a mate over half a mile, while Dark Spot did a similar task b}' r himself. Count Cavour was given useful pacing. He is in good, healthy condition and a few gallops should bring him into racing condition again. Prophet’s Mark and Violet 11. were associated in a useful gallop on the plough. Taboo and Brightling went well in a gallop over five furlongs. Margaret Birney jumped off at the mile post and after going two furlongs was joined by Horatius. The latter made a bad pick up, however, and Margaret Birney was always in front, finishing up a comfortable winner, after an attractive performance. Kilbox and Master Clarence were companions in a useful spin over five furlongs. Waterlow and Thorndale moved freely while galloping five furlongs on the plough. Radiac and King Abbej' were associated in a working gallop over six furlongs. Nincompoop and Precious sprinted five furlongs together. A number of other horses got through useful tasks but the work was not very interesting. ACCEPTANCES. FEILDING JOCKEY CLUB. Per Press Association. FEILDING, November 22.
