An interesting lecture on " Bird Life of New Zealand” was delivered by Mr Edgar F. Stead at the Y.W.C.A. last evening. The lecture, which was illustrated by lantern slides, was replete with information, and much appreciated by the large audience. The chief purpose of the lecture was to arouse an interest in the preservation of the native birds of the Dominion.

Mr J. D. Hall, to whom the sum of £2OO was owing by the late Spreydon Domain Board, has written to the Town Clerk of Christchurch authorising the expenditure of the sum mentioned on the erection of a pavilion or other permanent improvements, in the domain, in which case he will not demand payment of the amount. The City Council at its meeting last night decided to accept the offer and thank Mr Hall for his generous gift. In reference to the proposal to obtain a loan under the Health Act for the purpose of providing new conveniences in connection with the Cathedral Square Improvement Scheme, _the Medical Officer of Health asked that a tally be taken of the number of persons using the men’s conveniences for a period of one week. This tally was taken from Monday, November 8 to Sunday, November 14. and showed that 27,541 persons used the conveniences during that period. The largest number for one hour was 888 and for one day 7.207.

Dr J. 'Hight is to be the guest of the Workers’ Educational Association at a social gathering on Thursday evening, when the students will wish him bon voyage before he sails for England. He has always taken a great interest in W.E.A. work, and since its inception has been a member of the Tutorial Class Committee. Since 1921, Dr Hight has been treasurer of the Dominion Council.
