NO STREET FIT FOR BUS TRAFFIC UNLESS IT IS TAR SEALED.
The licenses for motor omnibuses, which have been issued by the Christchurch City’ Council, provide that the buses shali run along certain streets. In the opinion of the City Engineer, no street is fit for this traffic unless it is at least tar-sealed. Most of the streets that the buses have been permitted to use are not tAr-sealed, and, in the opinion of the engineer, the wear and tear on these roads will be v6ry heavy. At last night's meeting of the City Council, the By-Laws Committee recommended that the omnibuses be allowed to use the roads in accordance with the licenses issued, but that the condition of the roads be given consideration before the licenses are renewed at the end of May’, 1927, when the present licenses expire. The recommendation was approved. A report on the matter from the City’ Engineer read as follows: The Chief Traffic Inspector has advised that the following roads and streets Are proposed to be used for regular motor omnibus services in the city’:—
Cathedral Square, Colombo Street, Papanui Road, Armagh Street, west end to east end, Patten Street. Wood ham Road, Durhim Street, Springfield Road, Somme Street, ( Brown’s Road, Brett's Road. Knowles Street, Rutland Street, Knowles Street to Hawkesbury Avenue, Park Terrace. Shrewsbury’ Street, Andover Street, Winchester Street, St.rowan Road, Oxford Terrace, from Manchester Street to the east, Kilmore Street, from Oxford Terrace to Fitzgerald Avenue Bridge. Warden Street, Chancellor Street, Slater Street, Ollivier’s Road, Hereford Street, from east end to Square.
It: is not considered that any road is fit for this traffic unless it is at least tar-sealed, and the only tar roads in the list are: Cathedral Square, Colombo Street, Papanui Road, Durham Street, section Kilmore Street to Bealey* Avenue, Park Terrace, Oxford Terrace, section Manchester Street to Kilmore Street, Kilmore Street, section Oxford Terrace to Fitzgerald Avenue.
As for the remainder, most, if not all, are being used by’ the buses and the wear and tear on, and consequent maintenance of, the surfaces is and will be very heavy. The report wa3 received.
