SUMNER COUNCIL DEALS WITH BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
The fortnightly meeting of the Sumner Borough Council was held last evening;; present—Councillors F\ C. Cooper fin the chair), H. C. S. Jamieson, H. W. Harris, C. I. Denham, A- H. Tutill, A. Holden and E. A. Johnson. An apology for absence was received from Councillor B. .T. Ager. The Standing Committee reported that two new eat* services had beeu installed. The work of putting: in new beds to the retorts has so far advanced that they were expected to be in use in about three weeks. The engineer had mentioned that drainlayers in Redclirrs had interfered with the gas services when laying the sewerage connections. Five new electric consumers had been connected up. and during: the month, the Public Works inspector had . made an inspection of the whole of the reticulation in the borough. Excepting: a few, the whole of the switchboards had been altered to comply with the new reflations for the supply. Reconstruction work was in hand at the foot of the Lyttelton Road, and it was Intended to start work shortly on the main road between the pumping station and Celia Street. The quantity of water pumped to the Shag Rock reservoir was 8,2*8,000 gallons. The pump for the No. 3 Redcliffs severage tank had arrived. The committee recommended that drainage contractors be warned not to interfere with either gas or water The financial statement showed a debit balance of £4799 17s lOd and accounts amounting to £1650 Is were recommended for payment. The payment of the usual grant of £lO to the Christchurch Technical College was recommended. The committee advised that the application for consent to subdivision plan of land at the corner of Campbell Street and Wakefield Avenue be declined, as lc did not comply with the by-law. The use of radiators after 10 p.ra. on the name terms and conditions as power for water heating was recommended. It was recommended that the Town Clerk be authorised to make a progress payment on account of the ga» retort contract on receipt of a certificate from the engineer that the work had been completed. The engineer had been requested to report when he would be able to cut back the rock at the corner near the tramway bridge. The report was adopted. The State Advances Department advised that £3OOO had been granted the council for sewerage works. A letter from the Sumner Burgesses* Association regarding the track on Scarborough at the end of Bury Street was received. It was decided to ask the engineer to report‘on the cost of the erection of a fence across the entrance. The Life Saving Club wrote thanking the council for its grant of £lO It wa« reported that the work at the men's bathing sheds had been comgleted and that sn excellent job had een made. Tho foreman was authorised to proceed with the work at ths ladles* bathing sheds at once.
