SUMNER COUNCIL DISCUSSES SPEEDING ON BOROUGH ROADS.
At. last night’s meeting of the Sumner Borough Council, the borough traffic inspector reported that on Sunday last between 4 ajid 6 p.m., he had been on duty on the main road at Redcliffs. During that time twenty-six cars passed him at a speed of over 25 miles per hour, but not more than 30 miles per hour. These cars were timed over one fifth of a mile, but their passage had been quite orderly with the exception of a few, who had attempted to cut in and pass other cars. However, he recommended that action be taken against several motor-cyclists whom he reported for several offences, including no lights, open exhausts, excessive speed, especially over intersections, and pillion riding. These, he said, were a menace to residents, especially to children. Councillor F. C. Cooper said that some action should be taken. The position seemed tt» be that motorcyclists came to Sumner and made the good roads their training ground. They were a menace to themselves and to children. Councillor A. Holden said that their licenses should be taken from them. He deplored the way in which cyclists came roaring through Redcliffs from the cutting to Shag Rock corner, and he supposed that they went through Sumner in this way also. , Councillor E. A. Johnson moved that tne matter be held over till after the oj dinar y meeting, when the council would go into committee Tins w»s seconded by CounciUor A. Holden and carried.
