ANXIETY FELT AT CLARKVILLE.
The settlers in the Clarkville district had a very anxious time, but up till eleven o’clock the new stop bank, erected by the River Trust was still holding, the water back. At 5.30 this morning the bank erected by Wright Bros., just above the cutting bridge, gave way and all the country between there and within a mile of Kaiapoi was flooded. The road was covered with water for a length of on three miles. A large area newly planted in potatoes was completely flooded and the crop will be a total loss. Two Christchurch residents, who motored out this morning, were amazed at the swiftness of the river at Kairaki. It was rapidly taking away the great sand-bank there. Many of the houses, including Captain Featherston’s, had gone. On© of them had been thrown down on to its side, and was bobbing about in the water. The bank is strewn with pines torn up from plantations. The waves in the river there, about 11.30 a.in., were six feet high.
