A self-style(| detective, Frederick Jackson, was fined £lO, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment, this morning on a charge of impersonating a member of (he police force. The case in which Alice Merry, a widow, was charged with failing to deliver particulars of her deceased son to the Commissioner of taxes was concluded to-day. Mr Tudliope said the woman lost her husband and son within a few weeks of each other. She lived alone in jtn empty house and was apparently obsessed with the idea that there was a conspiracy to defraud her. A solicitor from another centre, who was a member of Parliament and a friend of the defendant, had now persuaded her, and she had agreed to file accounts.
