SOCCER REFEREES ARE ON STRIKE

(Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND. July 23. When nine Soccer referees appointed for to-morrow notified their inability to fulfil their engagements, the Auckland Football Association refused to accept the position. They then interviewed the executive, but the chairman, Mr A. Menzies, made several slighting remarks regarding the Referees’ Association, and intimated that, the members would be prohibited from using their passes to Blandlord Park. The referees brought matters to a head last night by refusing to supply for any but school fixtures. When the. decision was communicated to the Football Association Mr Menzies said the executive was not worried. The Football Association had already arranged for outside referees to take charge of all games. Though the referees now urged the setting up of an appointment board, Mr Menzies observed that the executive’s previous efforts to have such a body formed had failed. He added that the New Zealand Football Association had power to deprive the members of the Referees’ Association of their badges.
