THIRTY-FOUR MEN ARE GIVEN RELIEF WORK.
THEY ARE ASSIGNED TO VARIOUS TASKS. Thirty-four unemployed men Avere engaged for relief works this morning. Twenty were sent to Beckenham Park, I where they will be employed in pre- [ paring a children’s paddling pool and I in road-making operations under the j direction of the Works Department of i the Christchurch City Council. | Six men were assigned to Victoria Square, where they are working in the vicinity of the big gun/ They will dig up the lawn in this locality, which needs re-sowing, and they will also be engaged with the reforming of the paths. Three men Avere assigned to the Mr R. B. Owen said this morning. “Three men Avere assigned to the Botanical Gardens, where they will be -employed in improA'ing the grandstand site; and two men were sent to join the . batch engaged on, the Ileathcote River banks. • Three others were assigned to the Council- ReserA-e at Wainoni, where they will be engaged in preparing the land for tree-planting. It Avas not that so many men \tould respond to fhe notices sent therii to report for duty.
