LIGHT AND GLOOM .
CONSERVATISM AND CHRISTCURCII. It sounds almost incredible to believe that despite the many years Christchurch has possessed the benefits of Lake Coleridge power there should remain out of 26,000 houses in this area, 8000 which are not yet connected, but are struggling along with the obsolete lighting Systems of gas, kerosene, and even candles. Prejudice is in many cases the cause of this, that innate conservatism that makes many of us so radically opposed to change. The objection certainly cannot be on the score of expense for electric light is the cheapest illumination the world has ever had. It cannot be upon the ground of service because the luxury of abundant soft white electric light creates an atmosphere of pleasurable refnement marking the essential atmosphere of the home. A badly lighted home cannot be a comfortable one. Good lighting is a science and the Municipal Electricity Department has made a special study of it. Any information asked for is gladly given, if possible, by the Department's experts, without any obligation upon the part of the inquirer. ‘ISSS
