lIA RE WOOD EUCHRE AND DANCE. A euchre and dance will hi held in the Harewood Hall on Thursday, June D at S p.m. Admission 2s, ladies Is (id. THE ‘FIFTHS.” The “Fifths” wish to go to play Auckland at the end of the season, and it is to be hoped that their social activities to be promoted will be well supported. The “Fifths” are a credit to Waimairi. None are not more than, seventeen years of age and this year so far, they are unbeaten in their grade,. Last Wednesday they ran a really good dance at the Gaiety Hall. The Monte Carlo waltz was w.on bv '.Miss Miller and Mr C. Carr, while the Lucky Spot waltz went to Miss M. M’llro}* and Mr -N. Rossiter. The arrangements were a credit to the committee. PLUNKET SOCIETY. Instead of the usual monthly meeting of the Papanui sub-branch of the Plunket Society a visit was paid to the open air school at Fendalton. There were present:—Mesdames H. R. Smith (president), Orbell, L. Sisson, Tillman. Heywood, Poulson, Oehenden, Mann, Barnett and Miss Frvn (hon secretary). The committee was met and welcomed by the headmaster of the Fendalton School, Mr. A. R. Blank, and conducted by him through all the classrooms. The visitors were much impressed by the cheerful sunny conditions which prevailed in the two open air classrooms. Shortly after the arrival of the party the children were given an order and in a twinkling of an e}*e the room was cleared and the little ones scampering round the playground. Mr Blank explained that such exercise supplied practically all the heating . necessary beyond the sunshine, the fireplace being scarcely used even in the winter owing to the children keeping properly warm. The children take frequent exercise because the room can be very quick W emptied without any disturbance. Mrs 11. R. Smith thanked Air Blank in the name of the committee for his courteous reception and instructive explanations which had made the visit most enjoyable. BOWLING. The annual meeting of the Papanui Bowling Club was held in the pavilion, Langdon's Road on Thursday evening. The following officers were elected: — President, Hon D, Buddo, M.P.; treasurer, Mr M’Neilage: selection and match committee, Messrs S. M’Donald and Rev W. 11. Orbell; executive committee, Messrs J. C)uigle\\ S. M’Donald, Hadley junr.; green superintendent, Mr Yates. The appointment of secretary was left over to a future meeting, as Mr E. Gibson coukl not see his way to continue. A BAND. A meeting to consider the formation of a brass band for Papanui will be held at the libraiw room of the Memorial Hall on Thursday next at S p.m. All who can assist in any way are asked to attend. Messrs W. A. Foster and J. 11. Reynolds are co-convencrs. NOTES. The takings at the Memorial Hall for the Rev J. Miller's ‘‘A Nicht Wi’ Bums" were £4O. The net profit was over £32. In the recent seven-a-side tournament held at Monica Park the A team of
the local ‘fifths" won the fifth grade competition. with the B team runners-up. The final score was 3 to 2. Colin Carr scoring for the A and Archie Currie kicking a goal lor the B.’ . ST JOSEPH S EUCHRE AND DANCE. Cast Monday night's euchre'- and dance at St Joseph's Hall took the from :>f a "long night.” There was a large atendance and the floor was in first class order. The euchre winners were Miss Miller, first. Mrs Harrington; consolation, and Mr Shaskv. first, Mr T. Young, consolation. Mr J. Burke was M.C., and Mr P. Collins provided the music. Afterwards the ladies’ committee provided supper. PERSONAL. A very old and highly respected resident. of Papanui for the last fifty years passed away recently in the person, of Mrs Harriet Kettle. She leaves a grown J up family of eight sons and three daughters. WESLEY GUILD. The Wesley Guild met on Tuesday evening when the meeting was in charge of the Devotional Committee. Mrs Blamires presided over a good attendance. The subject for the evening. “The Teaching'of Jesus on the Bible,” ■ was opened by an excellent paper from Miss M. Irving. Several members took part in an interesting discussion that followed. Miss E. Craig contributed a solo during the evening. The next evening is "with the poets.” A delightful evening was spent at Mr and Mrs Leadbetter's residence on Saturday evening when their friends gave a "hard-up surprise party,” in honour of Master Laurie's birthday. He was presented with a book by Mr T. Mayne on behalf of those present, During the evening games and musicalitems were played, and a “mock marriage” ceremony was performed.
