TECH. COLLEGE BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEETS.
The Board of Governors of the Technical College met last evening; present —Jli* M'Gregor Wright (chairman!, Mrs H. F. Herbert, Miss A. Robinson, Messrs E. Jrl. Andrews, W. R. Gahagan, B. SethSmith, T. W. West, D. Rowse, J. W. Graham, W. Jones and A. Peverill. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT. The chairman stated that the Girls’ Hostel and the Boys’ Hostel were full The board now must see that accommoI aation was provided for all boys and i girls from country districts who wished to attend the Technical High School. | The board had had no help or oncouragement from the Minister of Education or the Department in establishing | the Boys' Hostel, and the subject should be kept steadily before the Minister. The reorganisation of post-primary education, probably, was the most prominent educational question at present, and the setting up of a Secondary Schools Board and a Technical Schools Board should prove a step towards the desired end. The Commission on University Education had reported strongly in favour of linking up technical colleges with the university colleges by allowing certain work in the technical colleges to be credited to the university colleges in cases of students proceeding to technological degrees or diplomas. Branches of technological studies at the j technical colleges in New Zealand could I do much more advanced work than they were allowed to do at present. The aim should be to develop those higher branches of education in the near future, when equipment and other facilities were available. The report was approved. THE PRINCIPAL'S REPORT. Dr D. E. Hansen, principal, reported that (he attendances at classes for the first term of the present year showed that the commercial and examination classes particularly had made marked progress in numbers, and that generi ally the enrolments in the evening classes were very good. There was a tendency for students to attend more evenings per week. The report was adopted. MISCELLANBOU S. N Mr W. S. La trobe, for the Director of Education, wrote stating that the board’s application for a grant of £I6OO in respect to additional dormitory accommodation at the Girls’ Training Hostel had been ordered to stand over. The Minister hoped to visit tlio school later, and t.ho board, no doubt, would afford him an opportunity to see tho. hostel. The letter was ‘received. Mr n. Grant, {Supervisor of Manual and Technical Education, wrote stating of\.he* col fol'c H fnr\ 026-27° would bo \'he same as for the previous year. The Education Board usually did not fix the month of election until its June meeting, but probably this year it would bo August. The Appointments Committee reported that Mr JO. ,S. Walton had been Appointed plumbing inspector in place of Mr C. Jones. The treasurer reported that (ho I'M ceipt.s since April 15 had been f 2041 Sfl bd and the total expenditure £4153 15s.
