RAILWAY COMMITTEE OF PROGRESS LEAGUE HOLDS MEETING.

A meeting of the Canterbury Progress League Railway Committee was held yesterday. Mr H. Holland, M.P.. presided, and there were also present Messrs J. D. Hall and W. Stringleman. The secretary of the Rangiora District Fruitgrowers’ Association wrote stating that it had been decided to bring under the notice of the league the increase in railway freights on fruit as shown in the revised November tariff, which increased freights on all distances up to 250 miles. The association asked for the support of the committee to have the rates reduced. The secretary was instructed to make inquiries into the matter. The Ayre County Council wrote asking for the support of the committee in their efforts to have a second level crossing made at Mandeville Railway Station. The council was willing to cart the necessary metal. The chairman said that he did not think that the siding would need shifting. He could see not the slightest objection to making the crossing. It ■was needed to cut out a nasty turn, and would straighten the road. Mr Stingleman said that it might be that. it was increasing the level crossing danger, as there was more risk of accident with two crossings than with one. The letter was referred to the Railway District Engineer, with a request that the Department should state its views on the matter.
