Mr W. H. Down returned to Christchurch yesterday morning after conducting the Indian Army hockey team through the North Island portion of their New Zealand tour. Mr 11. Holland, M.P., will leave on Monday for Wellington, to attend a conference of patriotic societies regarding the War Funds Council. A motion congratulating the Hon R. A. Wright on his appointment as Minister for Education, w*as passed* last evening by the Board of Governors of the Technical College. The board expressed a hope that while Mr Wright holds the portfolio, technical education will receive the support it deserves. Mr E. D. Taylor, the recently appointed supervisor of Music in Schools, arrived in Christchurch yesterday. He will address a meeting arranged by the School Committees’ Association shortly, and all kindred educational bodies and others interested will be invited to attend. Passengers by this morning’s ferry included Mr B. Norwood, Mr Hugh Speight, Mr K. Smith and Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P. Colonel Commandant M. Gard’ner, Officer commanding the Southern Command, arrived in Christchurch by the ferry steamer this morning. The following are among the guests at the Excelsior Hotel: —Mr and Mrs Houlihan (West Coast), Miss Newton (Fuller’s), Mr and Mrs Coleman (Akaroa), Messrs Harris. Cumming, J. Ryan and Townsend (Dunedin), Messrs J. Hall, F. Lewis, B. Barrett, E. Wright (Timaru) Misses Ruddie, J. Amos (Christchurch), Messrs W. Hall, A. Bain (Wellington).
