CHILDREN HAVE DISTINCT ACCENT; SOME ADULTS, TOO.
Have New Zealanders an accent? Mr E. D. Tayle-r, Supervisor of Musical Education, engaged by the New Zealand Government to control music in schools in the Dominion, says that the accent is distinct and fairly general amongst school children. “What about, the adults?” he was asked. "Well.” he said, “they have it too. some of them.” “There is no doubt that the children have a tendency to distort certain vowels, particularly oo and a}*,” said Mr Tayler. “Whatever the cause might be, careful training in singing should effect an improvement. “I have heard New Zealand born people who have spoken without a trace of accent, but there are others whom I have heard, and they have got it badly. “That is with regard to grown-ups —with regard to the school children— I can say that they seem to have a large amount.”
