ASHBURTON TROTS. AUTUMN MEETINU HELD IN, DULL WEATHER. (Special to the “Star.”) ASHBURTON, April 24. The Autumn meeting of the Ashburton Trotting Club was held to-dav in dull weather. The popularity of the. sport was again demonstrated by the large, attendance, which included a strong contingent of Christchurch enthusiasts. Large fields provided some excellent racing. Won by a head, a head between second and third. Time—2min 13 4-ssec. :—TES ON THE RACING. Twenty-four acceptors started In the Improvers’ Handicap. Mr H. F. Nicoll's two-year-old Hay dock was easily a better favourite than Wee Gus, with Ruiine just third choice. Zenith, Audaiion and Electric Huon were together in the lead at the end of .six furlongs, with Acre and Haydock next. Rufine joined in a little further on. Haydock fell in the straight, bringing Audaiion and Electric Huon down. Rufine beat Acre easily by over a length. Zenith was a dozen lengths away. Wee Gus was fourth. Acre Is a two-year-old by Author Dillon, trained by B. Jarden for the samo owner as the trotter Nighborn. Eighteen unhoppled trotters started in the Allenton Handicap. Kempton was a screaming favourite and Peter Felix second choice. Peter Felix led for six furlongs and was then beaded by Kempton, who had begun badly. Kempton went on to win easing up. He is a three-year-old owned by Mr H. F. Nicoll and It was a. fine performance. Peter Felix won at Ellersmere last week. The Durbar Handicap, the chief race of the day, attracted seventeen starters. Once more Mr Nicoll provided the favourite, but she did not leave the mark. Silk Thread headed Granite City s,t the end of three furlongs and led a big bunch till six furlongs from home. Becky Logan, who was always handy, then took charge and won a good race by half a length from Trenand, with Bing Boy a length away, just beating Countryman. The three placed horses were always prominent. Once more Mr Nicoll provided the ! favourite in the Harvest Handicap with l Gibraltar, but he failed to go off the i mark. Bon Pang and Stan Wilkes led ! a. bunch for half a. mile, when Honour Bright joined Stan Wilkes in the lead, I with Kulnine, Whakuku, and Four Bells in the next bunch. In a wonderful | finish, Kulnine beat Honour Bright by
a. head, Whakuku and Four Bells being only heads away. Ariki was the only scratching in the Autumn Handicap, leaving fifteen starters. Ivor and Tennessee’s Child disputed the favouritism, whilst Colene Pointer and hocanda Child were also well backed. Locanda Child and Rosethorn led over a mile. With half a mile to go Ivor and Locanda Child were in front with Neweourt handy. Tvor lasted Jong enough to beat Neweourt by half a head. Locanda Child was four lengths away. Tennessee’s Child was prominent half a mile from home, but faded out. Little Johnnie and Patard were scratched in the Utility Handicap. Nelson Ata was a good favourite. Wildbine, Peter Felix and Nourmahal were next in order. Peter Felix led for nearly a mile and a half when Nelson Ata took charge. Kelman was in front, at the entrance to the straight and won easily by three lengths. Wire finished fast, beating Wildbine by half a length. Peter Felix was fourth. Nelson Ata stopped badly. Bing Boy, Wharepiana. Judge Hancock and Event were scratched in the Rakaia Handicap. Berenice was just a better favourite than Trenand, with St Maura., Prince Lyons and Nantwich best backed of the others. Bingen Lad and Hydaspes led Ramaroa, Berenice and a bunch for half a mile. Then Hydaspes fell. Ramaroa, Berenice, Trenand, Fight. Ever, St Maura and Gleaming falling over her. Succession caught Bingen Lad and Nantwich in the straight and won by three lengths, Bingen Lad beating Nantwich by a length, with Prince Lyons fourth. WHANGAREI RACES. Per Press Association. WHANGAREI, April 24. The autumn meeting of the Whangarei Racing Club was held in showery weather. The course was in good order. TRIAL STAKES.
