In this issue the Railway Department advertises the running of a cheap excursion to Dunedin on Friday, March 5. This will give an opportunity of visiting the Exhibition at a small outlay, and with a minimum loss of time. The automatic fire alarm at the Bank of New Zealand corner struck up on its own accord this morning. The roads were cleared in the twinkling of an eye, but no speeding fire engine put in an appearance. By and by traffic ventured back on to the road, although warily, in case the brigade suddenly burst out of some unexpected quarter. Eater it was discovered that an alarm had not been raised at the Fire Station, but a line fault had caused the automatic alarm to sound. There was a small attendance of Riccarton ratepayers in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Upper Riccarton, last night, when the Waimairi County Council’s proposal to raise a loan of £40,000 for paving the thirteen miles of main roads in the county with bituminous concrete was explained to this section of the county’s ratepayers. The sections to be dealt with are on the North Road, Marshland Road, Riccarton Road and Yaldhurst Road. Addresses were given # by Mr J. Seymour, chairman of the* council, Mr F. Freeman and Mr A. D. Paterson. The meeting decided to approve the Waimairi County Council’s scheme, and votes of thanks were passed to the speakers. Yesterday a mock battle was held at the Burnham military camp, where there are at present about one thousand men in training. Various manoeuvres and field operations were executed. In the afternoon three aeroplanes from the Wigram Aerodrome flew to the camp, and took part in the events. “Spotting,” scouting, bombing and attacking proved interesting work for the officers and men of the, camp.
