SONOMA DROPS PROPELLER. SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 25. The Oceanic liner Sonoma, bound to Australia, dropped her starboard propeller six hundred miles ouL She is returning to port. SIX MONTHS’ GAOL. HAMILTON, February 26. At the Sumpreme Court the trial was concluded of Leonard Charles Davis, driver of the motor lorry which killed Ernest Thomas White, who was one of a party on the vehicle when returning to Hamilton from the Waipa races at Te Awamutu on December 12. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy on account of accused’s previous excellent character and sober habits. A sentence of six months’ imprisonment was imposed. HEiVY PINES INFLICTED. GISBORNE, February 26. Before Mr Levvy, S.M., to-day, Charles Croon was charged with street betting and publishing a double card. lie was convicted on five counts. Arthur Owen pleaded guilty to two charges of street betting. The Court said the cases cpuld not be treated lightly. A great deal of the business that chme before the Court was, no doubt, due to illicit operations of men of the accused's type. On the first street betting charge Croon would be fined £IOO, and on each of the others £2O. On the charges of publishing double cards Croon would also be fined £2O on each.
