CORN-BORER THREATENS NORTH AMERICAN CROPS, SAYS CANADIAN.

U.S. EXPERT, HOWEVER, DECLARES NO NEED FOR “ SCARE ” OVER PEST. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Reuter’s Telegrams. (Received December 26, 11.30 a.m.) OTTAWA, December 24. Owing to the continued spread of the European corn-borer the corn crop in North America is in danger, according to a statement by Mr Arthur Gibson, Dominion Entomologist in the Federal Department of Agriculture. Mr Gibson says: “The caterpillar has spread like wildfire during the last two years. Ontario is the only province interested as yet, but the pest has spread into Ohio and Michigan, and undoubtedly will soon reach the great com belt in the United States.” WASHINGTON, December 24. That the ravages of the European corn-borer, while potentially dangerous, are not as acute in the United States, is the opinion of Dr Howard, Chief of the Bureau of Entomology in the Department of Agriculture, as described in Canada. Dr Howard made it clear that there was no present ground for a “ scare ” because of the pest.
