Mrs Denys Hoarc motored Ihrough to Timaru from Christchurch yesterday and is spending a few days with Airs AY. AY. Baxter, AYai-iti Road. Aliss Rita Moir. A verv pleasant little function took place recently when the staff of the South Island Motors gathered to bid farewell to Miss Eleanor Byers, who is leaving to be married. The manager. Mr MKibbin, in presenting Mass Byers •with a handsome tortoiseshell dressing table sot, a memento from the stall, spoke in, eulogistic terms of her work during her eight, rears with the com panv and the high esteem in which she was held bv the members of the staff who all joined him in wishing Aliss Byers ever'.- happiness in her new sphere of life. Miss Byers made a charming little speech in response. Aliss AT. IT. Macandrew died in AA'ellington on Saturday. She was well known in Ashburton, having been matron of the County Hospital some tweritv-five vears ago. and she had occupied similar positions at the Grey and Kumara Hospitals. In the war period Miss Macandrew was engaged in work in England for the Order of St. John and Red Cross Society, and she had a. long and meritorious connection with the Si John organisation in this country. Her work was* recognised in September last, when she was received at Government House, Wellington. and invested by her Excellency Alice Fergusson with the Star of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. Among those staying at. the Mount, Cook Motor Company’s White Star Hotel, Queenstown, last week were: Air A. Peters and Air and Airs Gloster- ! Downing (London), Aliss E. Formally and Miss A. Milne visited the residence of Air anrl Mrs T. Stocker, of Division Street. Riccarton, The evening was spent in games, music, competitions and dancing and a dainty supper was served in the spacious dining room. The singing of “ Auld Lang Syne brought a most enjoyable evening to a close. Among the guests were: Air and Mrs 11. On the occasion of the coming of age of their eldest daughter, Millie, Air and Airs AA r . 11. Kerr gave, a party at their residence, Bowenvale. Ollivier's Road. Linwood. An enjoyable evening was spent in dancing, games and competitions. Musical items were given by Airs Archibald, Misses Enid Horton. Elsie King, Kitty M’Japnet, Millie Kerr, Ruby Archibald. Lily Archibald and Air Kerr. Air M’jannet proposed the health of Aliss Kerr. The evening was concluded with the singing of “ Auld Lang Syne.” Those present, were: Air and Airs AY. IT. Kerr, Mrs Archibald, Air and Mrs M’Jannet, Mr Irvine. Mrs Alardcn, Alisses Ruby and Lib’ Archibald. AA’innie and Eileen King, Millie and Selma Kerr. *l\itty, Xorah and Alice M Jannet, Elsie King (Melbourne), Enid Horton. Dorothy Alarden. Doris Archibald, and Alasters Clifford Kerr and Willie M’jannet. Two happy gatherings of mends who had taken an active interest in the late C.AI.S. missionary display held in St John s parish hall on behalf of the Hangchow hospital. China, were the guests of Airs J. Russell Brunt. 16, Buccleueh Street, Linwood, on Tuesday afternoon and evening. The object of the meetings was to receive, the report. and balance-sheet of the late missionary display and to receive a souvenir of the occasion :n the shape of a nicely printed photograph of the doll wedding and garden party. The. souvenir contained a photograph of Nurse B. AL Brunt, and her expressions of thanks to all those who in any wavcontributed to the success of the missionary dispiay. Airs Harrv Baker, on behalf of those, present, thanked Airs Brunt for entertaining her friends during the months of preparation, as a result of which two large cases of goods had been forwarded to Nurse Brunt at Hangchow, China. During the evening songs, recitations and*pianoforte selections were contributed by Airs P. AA*. Sowdcn and Alisses D. Crichton and Li-,a Williamson. A quantity of Chinese cross-stitch goods sent for sale on behalf of the Hang chow hospital was on view.

Darwin, of Melbourne, is staying at “ York House,” Ilannier Springs. Mr and Mrs Norman Trenery ("Melbourne) are among the recent arrivals at "Warner’s Hotel. Dr and Mrs G. W. Cole (Auckland) arrived by the ferry steamer yesterday and are staying with their daughter, Mrs F. G. Pi esse. Mr and Mrs C. 11. Gough and Miss Beggv Bcaven are staying at Waiau for a few days before leaving for the North Island. Mr and Mrs Jack Martin. Martinborough, arrived from the north this morning and are staying at- the Clarendon Hotel, Mrs W. F. Hamilton. Ash wick, left Christchurch this morning for her home after spending a few days in (’hristcburch. Mrs G- H. Mira ms (Lower Hu ft, Wellington), Mrs Haywood Miroms, Mr and Mrs H. Young (Wellington), are among the recent- arrivals at the United Service Hotel. Guests at the Hotel Federal include: - Mr W. H Rnndlc, Ashburton: Mr H. B. Hansen, Wellington; Mrs I.
