CLOSE VOTING IN PREVIOUS ELECTION.
CHRISTCHURCH EAST CONTEST RECALLED. The ties in Lyttelton and Westland are bound to recall other instances of close voting in New Zealand elections. In 1911 there was a keen contest foe the East Christchurch seat. The second ballot was then in force, and the polling on the general election day made that final appeal necessary. On the first ballot, taken on December 7, 1911, the voting was: H. T. T. Thacker . . . 2492 T. H. Davey_ . . . 2360 H. Hunter .... 235 G F. R. Cooke . . .418 These were the corrected official figures, but they were not arrived at until three days after the poll. The night of the poll the figures given were:— Thacker .... 2462 Davey ..... 2351 Hunter .... .2315 Cooke .... 40S It was subsequently discovered that a mistake had been made at a booth, which gave Mr Davey forty more votes than he actually received. The correction, with the inclusion of a few delayed absent votes, made a tie for second place between Messrs Davey and Hunter. The problem was solved on the official recount, which gave Mr Davey a majority of four over Mr Hunter for second place. Dr Thacker and Mr Davey then went to the second ballot, the result being: T. H. Davev . . . 4042 Dr Thicker . . 2561 - Majority for Davey . 11S1
