2000 CUTS MADE IN WIRE FENCE.

POLICE INVESTIGATING WAIROA MYSTERY. The AA'airoa correspondent of the “Hawke’s Pay Herald” states that a few days ago two miles of new fencing near Tuai, Lake AVaikaremoana.. greeted partly as a boundary fence between the power house site and the properties of Carper Brothers and R. E. Neaje, valued at £4OO, was destroyed in a most complete manner. The whole seven wires were cut at every post in the line, and in some places between the battens also. The destroyer of the feuce also cut tho wires holding

anchors at angles on level ground. The work of destruction was not only systematic and complete, but must have taken a considerable time to carry out, ns there were over two thousand cuts 3nade, and even with a powerful cutter used the work must have taken hours. The matter now is in the hands of the police, but so far there are no clues as to who committed the extraordinary act. Grouse for North Canterbury. At. last night’s meeting: of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society a letter was received from tho Garthe Side Game Farm, of Alberta, string that it had not yet shipped the sharptail and ruffed grouse ordered by the society. Tho society would be well advised to order sharp-tails- It was decided by the meeting* to older twenty pairs of sharp-tails this year. Offer by Victoria League. Haldane, wife of Professor Haldane, of Oxford, and sister-in-law of Tx>rd Haldane. Mrs Haldane makes the offer on behalf qf the Victoria League in London. The cablegram asks for particulars of the numbers of volunteer seamen and of the ships which they helped to man. A reply has been sent that over 200 men have already sailed on steamers bound for British ports. Mrs Haldane, is advised to apply for particulars of dates of arrivals at tho Lopdou offices of tho principal companies. She ,is also advised that it is important to see that lodgings suitable for a good cla«s of men is secured pending their embarkation on tlie return journey to New* Zealand. The Victoria League’s offer has come as a- surprise. It has heeu made spontaneously, no suggestion in this direction having been made in New Zealand. Identification of Calves. At a. recent meeting of the Council of the Friesian Association, Mr John I. Royds (Christchurch) wrote that for identification of calves, particularly in large herds, he had found l the card system very useful. Each ] card had an outline of a calf on it, • and on this diagram the markings of | the calf could be pencilled in. On I the reverse side the date of birth, sex, sire and dam were written. This method was merely preliminary to the photographic record of each animal. Mr E. C. Banks stated that he had found the metal numbered ear-tag very convenient and absolutely reliable. Immediately a calf was born a numbered metal tag was affixed to the top part of the ear of the calf, and a corresponding tag to the ear of the dam.
