THE ABANDONED CAT.
A BIG grey cat was the object of a city street’s interest. There lie sat in melancholy mien, in the dusty window of an empty store. Above his head a placard coldly announcing “ To Let” indicated a story of abandonment, perhaps hunger, to imaginative dwellers in the Street. The Street’s sympathies were aroused. As days passed the sympathy grew. Unaware of the commotion he was causing in the hearls of the Street, the dweller in the window divided his time between sleeping and rubbing against tile grimy glass in efforts to be friendly with those who stopped on the outside to console him. Then, in a moment, the Street learned that all was well, for a card, pasted to the bottom of the To Let sign bore these words in bold hand:— The Cat Can Get Out the Back Way. Owner.
