DOMINION PROGRESS IN EIGHTEEN YEARS.
MR COATES GIVES INTERESTING FIGURES. In the course of his address at the Exhibition opening at Dunedin yesterday, the lion J. G. Coates gave some statistics, dealing with the Dominion’s progress since the International Exhibition at Christchurch in 1906. Figures for that year ■and 1924 were quoted as follows: — 1906. 1924. Manufacturing establishments 3.517 4,461 Employees . 50,205 77,461 Wages and salaries - £4,118,521 £14.5/3,441 Materials used . £12,722,720 £47.027,033 Total products £22,425,000 £76,996.297 In the same period the value of production in the following industries increased as follows: Industry Increase. £ Engineering and agricultural implements 1,613,000 Clothing . 2.091.000 Printing 1,555,000 1 Biscuit-making and confec- > tionery . 1,020.000 ! Fttrnishing SOO,OOO Woollen 1,025,000 Tanning, woolsccuring and feilmongcring 1,000,000 Narrow Escapes. Three young men had a narrow escape from death when a piece of concrete fell from the clock tower at Westport. Stanley Lamont was struck on the chest and knocked out temporarily, but he was not seriously injured. This is not the first time, such a fall has occurred. Whether it ' li-i due to faulty construction when the i building was erected, or to the big shake the building got with the earth-
quake in 1913 and a slight ’quake on Saturday is not known. Local Option. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church concluded its annual conference at Dunedin last night. The Rev Tipler moved that it be a recommendation to the New Zealand Alliance that it work for local 'option on a provincial basis. The resolution was carried unanimously.
