A MYSTERY.
DISTRESS SIGNALS IN COOK STRAIT. Per Frees Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Juno 17. Tho mystery surrounding the distress signals reported in Cook Strait is heightened by the statement of the captain of the steamer Progress, which arrived here to-night from Wellington, that a rocket was observed approximately in the same locality at ten minutes past twelve this morning. The rocket was seen distinctly to flash and fall, and it was observed b> both tho master and mate, who have no doubt it was a distress rocket from some craft at sea. When tho rcckct was seen the position of the Progress was latitude 40 degrees 23£mm south, and longitude 173 degrees 12*min east, and the noint of the original rocket was bearing north-east by east from the Progress, which is approximately south of Wanganui. The Progress cruised in the locality till seven o’clock this morning, but found no trace of a ship and came on to New Plymouth.
