.PRESIDENT ARRIVES IN BERLIN. Reuters Telegrams BERLIN, May 1 L Marshal von Hindenburg, prior to his departure from Hanover for Berlin to assume the Presidency addressed a large gathering and earnestly pleaded for unity. He would bear in mind the poor and distressed, he said, and try to act as a peacemaker. The Marshal was given an enthusiastic. send-oiT and received a triumphal welcome upon making his formal entry into Berlin. When the train reached the gailv beflowered suburban station, at Heerstrasse. nine aeroplanes were hovering overhead dropping flowers. Ihe President, who was wearing a top hat and frock, coat, was welcomed by the i hancellor. Dr Luther, the ( hief Burgomaster of Berlin and other notables, with whom he shook hands silently. After tho presentation of a bouquet b\ Dr Luther's young daughter, Marshal von Hindenburg left on the five mile route to the Chancellor’s Palace, the road throughout being lined with cheering crowds whose salutations the Marshal acknowledged. Nationalist organisations were most prominent as the Republicans adhered to their earlier boycott decisionthroughout the drive Marshal von LI inrJenburg exhibited the air of an old man well pleased with the cordiality of his reception. At the conclusion of the drive the crowds dispersed quietl)'’, the Monarchists marching oft singing patriotic songs. 'I he President will take the oath of office to-morrow.
