Describing the late Lord Northcliffe Jn his book *' A Traveller in Nevs,” Sir William Beach Thomas, the special and war correspondent, says: “ Lord NorthclifYe was so deeply a .iournalist that a had paper affected him as discord might, a musician. Lord Northcliffe. asked by Mr John Walter, during the negotiations by the former for his share in the ‘ Times,’ 4 Would you make the ‘ ’limes ’ a penny,’ replied ; ‘No. I would make it worth threepence.’ The crucial interviews leading to the final transaction were held under a hedge behind a cabbage patch on Hampstead Heath.’’
