SHIPPERS TAXED.
FLAT RATE ON OVERSEAS FREIGHT. Per Press Association*. WELLINGTON, February 27. The extent to which Wellington, and its shippers and importers, are penalised under the system of a fiat rate on oversea freights is emphasised in a report presented to the Harbour Board by a committee consisting of the chairman (Mr G. Mitchell) and Mr J. G. Harkness. It is pointed out that in the adjustment of these freights no allowance is | made for the fact that Wellington is J the cheapest port- in New Zealand, but i on the contrary shippers at this port 1 are taxed by a high flat rate of freight, j both on imports and exports, to make j up for the loss on Horne ships travel- j ling round our coast and picking up a few tons at each port. The committee urge that the board should take every possible step to bring about a cliauge from the fiat rate system. The Harbour Board authorised reductions of an estimated total amount of £20,000 per annum in wharfage and ocher charges. According to the chairman approximately four-fifths of these reductions represent a concession to exporters and importers.
