IMPRISONMENT FOR DEBT.

Per Press Association'. WELLINGTON, September 30. The Chief Justice (Sir .Robert Stout) had before him the question of a Magistrate’s jurisdiction to order imprisonment for the non-payment of debt. He held that the onus iyas on the debtor to satisfy the Magistrate that he had not sufficient money to pay, and. in this case, it was clear the Magistrate was not satisfied. It was therefore within his jurisdiction, and his Honour dismissed the application to prohibit the Magistrate from enforcing imprisonment.
