WELCOMED TO BRISBANE.

LUNCHEON TO MR M. L. READING. Mr M. L. Reading, formerly editor of the “Lyttelton Times,” who was recently appointed editor of the Brisbane “ Telegraph,” was the guest of honour at a luncheon party at the Belle Vue Hotel, Brisbane, which was, in some respects, quite unique. It was arranged by the directors of “The Telegraph,” and the guests included directors. editors and managers of the other three Brisbane newspapers, and also re preventives of the Country Press of Queensland. The happiest atmosphere pervaded the charminglydecorated dining-room, and the gathering amply justified the many assurances conveyed to Mr Reading of the spirit of camaraderie which he would find among the personnel of the newspaper offices. Mr E. E. Edwards (chairman of directors of “The Telegraph”) presided, and after luncheon proposed “The King,” and then the health of Air Reading. His eulogy of the new editor included a reference to the many distinguished journalists whom New* Zealand had passed over to Australia, notably Dr F. W. Ward, who preceded Mr T. W. Honey in the chair of “The Telegraph.” A genially warm welcome was also extended to Mr Reading by Mr J. J. Kniglit (chairman of directors of “The Couriev), Mr F. Holland (director of ‘‘The Daily Mail’); Mr Alec. Robertson (editor ol the “Daily Standard”); the Hen T. M. Hall, and the Hon P. J. Leahy, on behalf of tho Country Press. All congratulated Mr Reading and ■• f'li© Telegraph” on the appointment’ that had been made, and Mr Knight, speaking from more intimate knowledge. referred to Mr Reading’s admirable personal qualities. Mr Reading telingly responded. Subsequently Mr R. S. Taylor (editor of “The Courier”), and Mr C. E. Sligo (editor of “The Daily Mail”) spoke to the toast of “The Directors of ‘The Telegraph,’ ” and took the opportunity of adding their tributes of praise to Mr Read”
