Mr J. Kilkison, Invercargill, is among the recent arrivals at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr J. AY. Collins, secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce, left for the south to-day. Air and Mrs Roy Eder, Christchurch, are spending a holiday visit on the West Coast. Air H. Holland, who has been in Wellington attending meetings of the National War Fund Council of the Justices of the Peace, returned to Christchurch this morning. Mr A\ . .E. Leadley. who is in Wellington on returned soldiers and City Council business, will return to Christchurch to-morrow morning. Messrs H. Jacobi (Auckland) and F. H. Hartog (Java) arrived from AVellington this morning, and are at Warner’s Hotel. "Mr W. Orange, foreman of the works, Westland section of railways, has received notice -of his transfer to Christchurch. Messrs J. Purcell (Wellington), E. F. Duthie, I. Andrews (Dunedin), AA\ A. D’Arcy and AV. D’Arcv (Wanganui) are recent arrivals at the United Service Hotel.

A cable message from London states that Engineer-Commander S. F. Cooper has been appointed secretary or tho Rugby Union*in succession to Mr C. J. B. Marriott, who is retiring. At a ipeeting of the Addington Burgesses’ Association last night a member stated that dead rats were continually to be seen on the roadway in one street -in the district, and on some mornings as many as a dozen had been noticed. The chairman stated that he had himself run over rats the previous night. It was decided to write to the city inspector - and draw bis attention to the matter.

Eulogistic references to the services of Mr F. H. Blakewell, who recently retired from the position of senior inspector, were made at the meeting of the Wellington Education Board. The chairman (Air T. Forsyth), voiced the regret of members at Mr Blakewell’s retirement. Mr Blakewell hfid been in the teaching profession for forty-one years, and his record was one of which he well might be proud. He had endeared himself to all with whom he had come in contact, and it was the general wish of members that he should be long spared to enjoy his well deserved rest.

Mr E. J. Howard. M.P., paid a brief visit to Christchurch yesterday, and left lor Wellington last evening. Today the New Zealand Parliament delegates who are to visit South Africa, at the invitation of the South African branch of the Empire Parliamentary Association will leafve Wellington on the Maheno to join the Euripides at Sydney. The tour begins at Durban oil September 1, and ends at Capetown on October 31. It will embrace visits to native territories, to agricultural, industrial, and mining centres in various provinces, with, in all probability, an extension of the tour to Rhodesia (including the Victoria Falls, Cecil Rhodes's grave in the Matoppos' and the Zimbabve ruins), and South-west Africa, the mandated territory, and possibly, also, Delagoa Bay. Special arrangements will be made for the transport and the accommodation of the delegation. The party consists of the Hon. A. F. Hawke, M.L.C., Sir John Luke, Mr J. Horn, and Mr E. J. Howard. Mr Horn is Chief Whip of the Liberal Party, and during his absence Mr S. G. Smith will act as Chief Whip and Mr E. A. Ransom as Junior Whip. Mr Howard is Chief Whip of the Labour Party.
