HOTEL WORKERS’ WAGES.
ACCIDENT COMPENSATION. The position of hotelkeepers and hotel employees in respect to board and lodging allowances under the accident insurance schemes of the various companies taking this type of risk was referred to this morning by Mr R. E. Brooks, secretary of the Hotel Work ers’ Union. Mr Brooks said that under the award the wages of employees were paid in three ways—cash, board and lodging. The amount of the hoard and lodging was assessed at 30s in the awaid, but the insurance companies, when paying accident insurance, only allowed £L a week for board and lodging. Under tiie regulations £1 a week was th*j minimum amount-, there being no maxi mum laid down. “This means u lot to thy* worker,"' Daid Mr Brooks. il as the 58 per cent or. 10s. the difference between what the insurance companies pay and the award rates, comes to os 4?d' Fiftyeight per cent .is the proportion of the . •wages . the insui ance companies have . 0.-pay,7 this being fixed- by the Act. ’ As far as 1 can see. if. the insurance companies: only pay out on the' basis of £1 a week, the hotelkeeper .is liable for the extra 10s. That is, if he docs not specify in his insurance policy that , the amount of insurance is to include | 30s for board and lodgings, (.he amount j laid down by the award.”
