“SHOT ITS BOLT !”
MOUNT EVEREST EXPEDITION. OXYGEN AND ALTITUDE CAUSES OF FAILURE: Bv Telegraph—Presa Association—Copyright Sydney “ Sun ” Cable. ( Received July 16, 10-30 a .to.) DKLHI, July 14. Colonel JC. F. Norton, of the Mount Everest Expedition, in a final dispatch, discussing some of the reasons for failure, says :—“ The thing that really r atters is the lack of oxygen. This not merely makes itself felt when men an: walking up hill, it permeates and dominates every minute of the climber’s life and saps all his energy. The effects of the exertion and the altitude increase consistently right to ihe top of the mountain and all determination and will to conquer iseriously weakened. The rapid intake of breath causes desiccation of the vv’hole bodily system, accompanied by intense depression of spirits.” Colonel Norton adds:—“ When tire monsoon season definitely set in. tho expedition shot its bolt.” The members are now recuperating in a sheltered valley, whence- they wifi return to Darjeeling.
