The romances and some of the hardships of the early shipping days of New Zealand are recalled in the series of articles now K eing published in the “Star” relating to the early shipping clays. The article printed to-day consists of extracts from the early files. ARRIVAL OF THE TREVELYAN. (From life “ Lyttelton Times, - ’ May j 14. 1880.) Arrived, May 13— Trevelyan, ship, iO4l tons, Roberts, fro.ui London. Edwards. Rennet and Company, agents. Tluis ship anchored on the powder grouhd below Kipa Island at 7 p.m. on Thursday. As stated yesterday, she , brings a number of passengers, and is , under the command of Captain A. F. ! Roberts, who was here in the Bebington lust year. We are indebted to Captain Roberts tor the following report: Left the East India Docks on February 7. and anchored at Gravesend, whore powder was shipped, and towed down to tfco JDr.wns next day. Lay there until February 10. and got away with a. south-east breeze. Passed the Isle of Wight on February 11, and landed pilot off the Start on February 12. with the wind strong from the south-west. Picked up the north-east trades in 41 north 12 west on February 2L, and when off Palmer Island, on February 19, spoke the Orari. Carried the trades to 9 north on March 7, and had then a spell of variable weather until March 12. when in 2 north the south-east trades were met with. Crossed tht Equator on March 14. The south-east trades were lost in 25 south on March 23. and variable winds Were then met with. Passed the meridian of the Cape on April 7. On April 26 experienced a fresh gale from west-north-west. and shipped a heavy sea, which carried away sheep-pens, hencoops. etc., and broke in the doors of the deck-house. Passed Tasmania on May 4. in 49 south, and carried west north-west winds to passing the Snares at 4 p.m. on May 8. Had variable winds and foggy weather alont? the coast. Sighted- Cape Saunders light on May 11 at 5 p.m. Arrived at. the Heads on Thursday afternoon and was taken in tow by the o.s. Lyttelton and towed up to an anchorage below Ripa Island at 7 p.m.
