SEAMEN’S STORY.

Six members of the crew of the wrecked steamer Ngahere who reside at Wellington, passed through Christchurch last evening, bound for Wellington by the ferry steamer Maori. They comprised the donkevman Stalk, greasers J. Garrett and Tanner, fireman W. Colville, the chief cook. A. Ross, the second cook. A. Lawton, and another fireman. All spoke in high terms of Captain Green and other officers of the ship. One of the party stated that when it was found that there was no hope of getting the ship out of its perilous position it was a question of man to man between the officers and the remainder of the crew. All on board were not alarmed in regard to getting off the vessel, but it was lucky . that the wreck occurred early in the afternoon as all hands were enabled to get ashore before dark. “The O-eymouth people were very good to us. and treated us very kindly,’ said a seaman “As a result of a concert £lO was distributed among the crew. There was just one little disappointment and that was in regards to the subsistence money provided. However, that is only a trifle and we are jolly glad to have escaped alive, though by good fortune none of us was injured.” On Wednesday evening the Girls’ Hockey Club at Grey mouth gave the j crew a dance at which the men took the opportunity before they separated j of presenting Captain Green with a set of pipes, and the chief officer.
