WRECKED NGAHERE.

POSITION UNCHANGED. (Special to the “ Star.'") GREY MOUTH. May 10. Very little change is noticeable in the position of the wrecked iNgaiieio. Tli© scau to-day have not been so heavy, but some parts of the vessel have suffered from the severe buffeting received in the last three days; -parts have been wash© 1 away, one ventilator is blown down, and practically all the deck cargo of timber lias been washed overboard. Ail attempt was made yesterday afternoon to reach the wreck in a row-boat and recover the two bags of mail and some of the crew’s belongings. The effort proved useless, however, as it was difficult to launch the boat and practically impossible to negotiate the water safely. With the approach of the spring tides hopes are entertained that the crew’s efforts to reclaim their effects will meet with greater success.

Many members of the crew went overland on this morning’s express, but some remained behind in the hope of succeeding in reaching the boat and recovering their goods. Some of 1 . crew succeeded this afternoon in red • ing the ship on the breeches-buoy and some of the effects were recovered under difficulties.

The officers and engineers of the Ngahere will remain in Grefy mouth until Saturday pending .instructions regarding the magisterial inquiry. It is possible that an inquiry will take place about next Wednesday. The men of the Ngaliere are anxious to recover the ship’s cat, which it is believed some person is keeping. The Uit commenced to swim ashore after the wreck and after a desperate struggle, succeeded, being exhausted when it reached the beach.

It is reported that gear belonging to a member of the Ngahere’s complement was picked up on tho beach at Seven Mile yesterday; this shows the powerful set to the northward.
