Canterbury batted first and scored 160 (Talbot 42, Oliver 41, Cunningham 36, M'Beth not out 17). North Taranaki replied with 156 (Lash 39. Palmer 24, Bot trill 20, Kingston 18. Newbold 17). SYDNEY, January 11. The Sheffield Shield match between New South Wales and South Australia commenced on a perfect wicket in a steamingrly hot day. South Australia batted first and made 333 (Y. Richardson 135. Gould 24. A. Richardson 90, Pritchard 62. Bowley 33. Mailey secured seven wickets for 133 runs and Hendry two for 68. New South. Wales have lost no wickets for 25. On a perfect wicket the two Richardcollared the bowling, but afte- their dismissal the tail of the team fell easy victims to Stanley's bowling.
