TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. Pub Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH. January 11. With comparative ease E. D. Andrews, a brilliant young Palmerston North player, defeated E. W. Smyth. Wellington and Otaso University, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1. to-day in the final of the man's singles in connection with the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association annual tournament. Andrews, who played a steadier same, E-cored off Smyth'i mistakes, and brightened his play by a masterly and varied display of brilliant strokes. He thus wins the championship for the second time in succession. The surprise of the tournament was effected by Mrs Melody (Wellington), who de feated Miss J. M’Laren (Dune-din), 6-2. 6-5, in the final of the ladies’ championship sinsrles. Steadiness rather than brilliance marked the match, a feature of which wag Mrs Melody's remarkable recovery from 2-5 to 6-5 in the second set.
