SUMNER RIPPLES

CHRONICLES OF THE WEEK

By Our Special Correspondent.

BOROUGH PICNIC. For many years now the borough '’as gone for its annual picnic on a Wednesday early in February, that day having been selected otn account of the borough holiday. This year, owing to shortage of funds, it is proposed to hold the picnic on the beach on the first Saturday in February. It is believed that a large number of people would much prefer a Wednesday at the Ricearton racecourse. The attractions and suitability of this spot have established it as a favourite. There is no transhipping ot luggage, and all that is wanted for the day’s outing is “right there.” It is thought that if the committee knows that the residents will find the money, as in years gone by, for a trip outside the borough. they will be quite happy about changing the present arrangembents. The feeling of the. district will probably be known by the time the school reopens. LIFE-SAVING CLUB. Two years ago the members of the Sumner Life-Saviug Club made a good rescue against a strong current, and the victim showed his appreciation by a. very substantial cheque. This year, on the anniversarv of the rescue, a further cheque of- two guineas has been received as a reminder that gratitude for these efforts does not die in .i hurry. The club very much appreciates the spirit in which the donation has been made. The club is holding its half-yearly meeting on Tuesday night. VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE. The superintendent of the Sunnier Fire Brigade has received from Mr Duggan a letter of thanks and an enclosure of £1 Is for services rendered at the outbreak of fire in the ■will be remembered that a big patch

of lupins which caught fire threatened some of the neighbouring residences. The superintendent states that a large - number of “ beaters.” so useful in combating grass fires, was not not returned after the big Clifton grass fire. REDCLIFFS REGATTA. The committee of the Redcliffs regatta concluded that portion of its programme which had been postponed from December S last Saturday. The events included the rowing races, and the boxing tournament which had been postponed owing to a fault in the lighting. Unfortunately for the oarsmen. the wind nearly repeated its performance of the first day. ft blew strongly from the east, and made the course a verv rough one for the crews. The local crew, V. Prebble and T. Prebble. gained a first, in the junior double, sculls, after a good race. The boxing tournament was well attended. the midget exhibition between V and C. Thomas proving very entertaining. and the exhibition bout by Brian M’Cleary and A Thomson being keenly appreciated. At the conclusion the president of the Gala Committee Mr H Le Page, presented the medals, and took the opportunity of thanking Dr F. Slater for his attendance. Mr Le Page referred to the great success of the gala effort, and heartily thanked the helpers for their loyal co-operation and hard work. PERSONAL. THE GALA. This year the efforts of the commit tee and the volunteer helpers can be classed as nothing short c 4 heroic X-u accepting defeat, they carried a three days’ programme over the heat and dust of New \ ear’s Day with distinct success. This volunteer band of workers gave up their holidays in the interests of the beach improvements, and the enlargement of St Leonard’s Square. 4u many cases those who worked did the paying too, and now that the labours of the undertaking bare ceased it is felt that the outside public cannot but deeply appreciate the efforts which were so faithfully made in the interests of others. Of the unexpected events at the gala, the request- of a visitor for the to keep a lookout for a threepenny piece he had lost was much enjoyed. Also an official who had been entrusted with a key found on tlic Esplanade, by the merest accident, discovered the owner to be his guest sitting opposite him during the Likewise, no one discovered the boy and girl's name in the guessing competition. They were Patrick and Pa tricia.
