SWIMMING.

NEW RECORD CREATED. The Canterbury. Provincial Swimming Championships were concluded this afternoon in the East Christchurch baths. A splendid performance was registered by Miss D. Breward in the girls’ 50yds breaststroke championship. Although she was the only starter and so had nobody to give her any pace, she succeeded in clipping 2 l-ssec from the New Zealand record. The mile championship was won easily by C. Atkinson. Following are the results:— ONE MILE CHAMPIONSHIP. C. Atkinson (East Christchurch) 1 L. Hill (Fendalton) . . .2 N. S. Batchelor (East Christchurch) and L. Moorhouse (United) also started. Over the early stages tho competitors swam evenly and Atkinson, Hill and Batchelor were practically together at th© end of 100 yards covered in 74 l-ssec. Moorhouse was a little over a yard behind them. At the 220 yards mark, reached in 2mi 11 63sec, Atkinson was forcing the pace, slightly in front of Batchelor and Hill, with. Moorhouse about five j’ards ‘back. Atkinson and Batchelor ooutinued to make the pace, with Hill keeping close up and Moorhouse dropping back. At the 850 yards mark Moorhouse dropped out. being then nearly a length of the bath behind. At the quarter-mil© mark Atkinson was leading Batchelor by about two yards and the time was 6min 3sec. Hill waa four yards further back. Over the next quar-ter-mile Batchelor dropped back, while At- | kinson continued to keep a solid pace. At ! the 880yds mark Atkinson was half a ; length of the bath ahead of Batchelor and ! Hill. The time was 12 27 l-ssec. At { the 1050 yards mark Batchelor, who had : dropped behind Hill, dropped out. and I Hill set out to attempt to catch Atkin--1 son. For a long while th© respective posij tions of the two remaining competitors were unchanged, Atkinson being about I three-parts of a length of the bath in front of Hill. Atkinson did cot appear to b© bustling. When 1400 yards had been covered Atkinson had increased his advantage to a. lap.
