MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. Tlio council of the Canterbury Automobile Association met last night. Mr A. I). Dobson (president) was in the chair, and eleven members attended. OUTING FOR 'THE CHILDREN. Arrangements for taking children in the orphanages for an outing wore discussed. It was suggested that the Tramway Board should be asked to give a concession, and, as an alternative proposal, that tho children should bo collected b> r car instead of their using the trams to assemble in Cathedral Square. An agreement was reached that the old arrangement, by which tho children, assembled in the Square, should bo adhered to. An opinion was expressed that the children should not be required to pay train fares to tho Square, and the chairman said that he would consult the tramway authorities as to the trams taking the children free. Coe’s Ford, near Selwyn Huts, was selected as the site, and February 23 was fixed as the date. ROADS COMMITTEE. Mr 11. Macartney, chairman of the Roads Committee, said that the road from the Rakuia to Mayfield had been sign-posted all the way. There was very adequate sign-posting in the Ashburton district. The roadman on the Main South Road was doing excellent work. The committee in its tour of inspection found that the Wairewa County Council had done good work in maintaining the roads and improving corners. The council should write to the Wairewa County Council expressing appreciation of what it had done. Camping Gully Creek should he visited soon in order that something should be dono to the ford there. The Main Highways Board should lie wafted upon and asked to giro precedence to the question of the Selwyn ford, which had been a source of expense to the association. Better arrangements for motorists at the Conway ford should be considered. A luncheon should be given to the Government officers and workmen engaged on the deviation of the Dyer’s Pass Road, on the Governor’s Bay side. The chairman said that great improvements had been made on the part of the Dyer’s Pass Road mentioned. Mr H. Lill said that the Ellesmere Comity Council had improved the road near the Selwyn station. The suggestions made by Mr Macartney were approved, and it was decided to thank tho Ellesmere County Council. A motion was passed that the Sumner Borough Council should bo asked to provide parking accommodation in the borough. RECKLESS DRIVING. Mr W. H. Nicholson said that he had heard of reckless driving on the Sumncr-Governor's Bay Road. He also had heard of driving on the wrong side of the road in Westland. One complaint there was in respect to the driver of a service car, who, more than any other driver, should exercise care. ‘' Rafferty’s rules ” seemed to be observed on the West Coast. The wide loading of service cars on narrow roads in that district also had been commented on. On Mr Nicholson’s motion, seconded by Mr Orbell, it was decided to draw the attention of motorists to the necessity for more care in driving on hill roads near Christchurch and to draw the attention of West Coast branches to the necessity for closer compliance with the rules of the road. MISCELLANEOUS. Forty-four new members •were elected. It was decided to invite the police to co-operate with sandwich men in enforcing the rule “ keep to the left” on footpaths.
