PRIZE DISTRIBUTION.

ST ALBANS. The annual prize-giving took place yesterday. The afternoon wa* devoted to the infant school. The chairman of the school committee. Mr T. P. Moore, opened the proceedings with a. short speech anct was followed bv Mr Sutherland, the hea-d master, and Mr Sey. A programme of songs and recitations wa.a given by the infants. The prizes were then presented, every child receiving »• book. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the teachers to the infants and parents. In tho evening the chairman (Mr T. P. Moore) opened the proceedings with an appropriate speech, which was followed by a short programme: Pianoforte solo. Nelson Mansfield; recitation, scholars; part song, scholars; song. Miss Ellis Fraser; action song, scholars. Speeches were made by Mr T. P. Moore. Mr Lano, secretary of the Education Board, Mr C. 8. Thompfon, a member of the board, and Mr Sutherland the head master. A special note was made that not a scholar had failed in the sixth standard The distribution of prizee then took place. The merit certificates were presented by the chairman. The prizes for Standards VI., IV., and TI. by Mr Sutherland and those for Standard V., TIT., and I. by Mr Lane. One hundred and. eighty prizes were distributed, including merit, running. swimming and lawn tennis. Wilkinson, chairman of the school committee, presided, and the members of the school committee and a number of ladies were also present. The pupils in the lowest primary classes, to the number of 160, were each presented with a book. The vemaining classes, numbering close on 700 pupils, were assembled by

Mr Wilkinson and by the head master, Mr A. C. Maxwell. Hearty cheers were given for the school committee and for the head master and staff. At the conclusion of the prize-giving, a pleaßing function took place in the teachers’ room, tbe committee aud teachers being entertained at morning tea by Mr and Mrs IVilkinson. A presentation from her fellow teachers was made to Miss Brewins, who is leaving to take up another position. A presentation waß made by the teaching staff to Mr Creagh, the school caretaker.
