ARCHITECTS REUNION

PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. The 1923 session of the Christchurch Architectural Students’ Association was brought, to a close by a most delightful “ Smoke-oh ” held in the Centreway tea rooms in Lichfield Street on Tuesday evening last. Tho gathering took the form of a reunion, the architects being present in goodly numbers, several interested visitors, and the members of tho Students’ Association. in force. The evening's proceedings opened with the toast of “ Tho King,” proposed by the chairman, Mr F. Barlow, who presided in the absence of Mr Penlington, president of the Canterbury branch, New Zealand Institute of Architects. Tho annual report of the Students’ Association was read by the secretary, Mr G. W. Bucknell, which was followed by the presentation of tho prizes by Mr F. Barlow. The prize-winners were as follow :—Silver Challenge Cus> (awarded for most meritorious performances in senior design competitions), Kir G. "SV. Bueknell; Kir G. A. J. Hart’s prize (for most designs submitted), Kir W. L. Watson ; Mr Robinson’s jirizG for book-plate design. Mr S. Townsend; junior section designs, Mr G. Sayers first and Mr L. B. Hobbs second, y On proposing tho toast of, “ The/Tn.stitute,” Mr Bucknell spoke in glowing terms of the invaluable service that the architects had rendered the association, though Mr Robinson, in responding, was of opinion that the architects could still be of more assistance to the association. Mr V. R. J. Hean, chairman of the association, thanked the institute for the generous manner in which they had fostered the association through its short yet chequered career. It was they, he said, who made it possible for the association either to flourish or to fail ; and according to the paternal interest displayed by the architects, so the association would be assisted to turn out real architects a credit to the profession, or, on the other hand, a crowd of mediocres. In addition, the toast of “ The Association ” was proposed by Kir Guthrie, and responded to by Mr Hean : “ The Donors of Prizes,” proposed by Mr J. O. Holliss and responded to by Kir F. Barlow; “ The Entertainers and Visitors,” proposed by Mr W. L. AVatson and responded to by Messrs Oliver and Campbell. The Centreway was temporarily disguised as an art gallery for the occasion, when every available foot of wall space was covered with architectural designs, tho result of the students’ work during tho past year, to be admitted, or leniently criticised by an interested and kindly audience. A splendid programme of musical and elocutionary itepis was generously contributed by the following gentlemen : —Messrs Hall, Hutton, Oliver. Holliss, Lawry, Campbell, Brown, and Ball. A happy evening was terminated after an informal inspection of the, students’ work, which, judging from comments, has reached a very high standard in many cases.
