HELMORE’S LANE.

WAIMAIRI COUNCIL’S DECISION. The visit of inspection to Helmore’s Lane was reported upon last evening by Mr R. \V. Hawke, chairman of tho Waimairi County Council. He said that he had discussed the matter with the residents last Friday evening, and now recommended that no change should be made in the width of the roadway. The council, however, should put in concrete channelling and an asphalt footpath on the west side from the bridge going north. The present holly hedge should be left, providing it was cut back to a height of three feet, and a zig-zag path (not asphalted) made underneath the trees. This would provide a beautiful walk in summer-time. Tliece arrangements should he given a trial, and it would rest with the council how long they held good. With regard to the trees, two in front of Mr W. J. Moore’s property should be cut down. In reality this would be an improvement, for the trees were too close together, and the remaining two trees would grow into better shape. Mr J Seymour seconded the chairman’s recommendations pro forma. Mr G. E- Curry said there was no intention of the council to neglect public interests. There were other places that were public reserves in the council’s domain, and sections of land that were set aside for road-widening that were in partial use by private people. When the council required complete possession thev would obtain it without trouble. It was all a matter for the county, and the spot so much discussed would be kept beautiful. It was unlikely that there would be much traffic in Helmore’s Lane for five or ten years.

Mr W. F. Spencer said that he thought the shrubs should be left from Rhodes Street to the river only, and also that the four trees confronting Mr Moore’s property should be cut down.

There was some desultory discussion. in which the chairman emphasised that the arrangements proposed would hold good only -during the pleasure of the council.

The recommendations of the chairman were then unanimously approved.
