December 10. Mr Austin Hopkinson, a member of the House of Commons, speaking at Ashton-under-Lyne, said that politicians in Britain had reached a depth of degradation so far unknown even in the rotten borough days. There had been a distinct, lowering of tone in the political life of each of the last four Parliaments. One could see the reason in the midst- of the recent campaign, in which the amount- of King, slander and the utter lack of patriotism or real love for the welfare of the people baffled description. “ I have given my blood, money, and services absolutely and whole-heartedly to mj country,” lie said, “but the degree ol hatred and malice even close to my home is a horror and a. disgust to ni€ as each election comes. Unless the young men and women of Britain insist upon truth, honesty and patriotism in politics Heaven help the eo«ntrv.’ :
