MANUFACTURING SOFT DRINKS.
WAGES OF WORKERS. The wages and conditions of the aerated water workers of the Canterbury Industrial Union were the subject, of discussion at a meeting of the Conciliation Council to-day. Mr \V. H. Hagger, the Conciliation Commissioner, presiding. The assessors were:—For the union, Messrs J. Preston, G. A. Brown aud C. Renn; for tho employer, Messrs C. M. Saunders, J. R. Heyward and E. P. Wright. An application for a hearing had been made by the union. The principal clauses of the union’s demands were:—The weekly hours of work for inside workers to be forty-four; for drivers fifty-two; for extra drivers employed only between November 1 and April 30, forty-eight. On Saturdays all work ceasing at noon during the winter and 1 p.m. during the summer. Wages, the following to be the minimum rates of weekly wages payable:—Cordial makers JES, bottlers, corkers, packers and case makers £4 10s; bottle washers and general labourers about the factory or yard not covered by any other award, £4 6s; females to be paid the same rates as males, drivers’ wages to be iu accordance with the award in force for drivers and casual workers, 2s 3d an hour. The wages for youths, the union asked, should be as follow:—Between fiftegn and sixteen years, £1 10s; sixteen and seventeen years, £1 355; seventeen and eighteen years. £2; eighteen and nineteen years, £2 ss; nineteen and twenty years. £2 10s;' twenty and twenty-one yearn, £3; youths assisting carters, £2. The union offered the old award as a counter proposal. (Proceeding.)
